How to Sell Prescription Glasses on Shopify: Custom Lens and Prescription Fields

Learn how online optical stores configure prescription inputs, pupillary distance (PD) measurements, and lens add-on charges on Shopify without custom coding.

Selling prescription eyewear and custom optical lenses on Shopify requires capturing intricate clinical parameters from customers, including Sphere (SPH), Cylinder (CYL), Axis, Pupillary Distance (PD), and optional lens coatings (Blue Light Filter, Anti-Reflective, High-Index 1.67/1.74, and Photochromic Transition lenses).

Because standard Shopify variants are limited to 3 options and 100 variants, calculating the permutation of frame colors multiplied by prescription values results in thousands of variant combinations—far exceeding native limits.

In this guide, we walk you through setting up an end-to-end optical prescription workflow using GP Product Options.

Required Data Inputs for Prescription Eyewear

An e-commerce optical store must capture the following fields:

  1. Vision Need Selection (Radio / Buttons): Single Vision (Distance/Reading), Progressive/Bifocal, or Non-Prescription Fashion.
  2. Right Eye (OD) & Left Eye (OS) Prescription (Dropdowns):
    • SPH (Sphere): -10.00 to +6.00 in 0.25 steps.
    • CYL (Cylinder): -4.00 to +4.00 in 0.25 steps.
    • Axis: 1 to 180 degrees.
  3. Pupillary Distance (PD) Input (Number / Dropdown): Single PD (54mm–74mm) or Dual PD (Right/Left).
  4. Prescription File Upload (Optional File Upload): Allow customers to upload a photo or PDF of their doctor prescription slip.
  5. Lens Index & Coating Add-ons (Image Swatches with Surcharges): Standard 1.50 Index (+$0), Ultra-Thin 1.67 (+$35), Blue-Light Blocking Coating (+$20).

Step-by-Step Configuration in GP Product Options

Step 1: Set Up the Base Optical Option Set

In your GP Product Options dashboard:

  • Click Create Option Set and name it Optical Prescription Configuration.
  • Assign it to your Eyewear Frames or Prescription Sunglasses collection.

Step 2: Use Conditional Logic for Prescription Type

Configure If/Then rules so customers only see prescription input fields when they choose Prescription lenses:

  • Rule: IF Vision Type = Single Vision (Prescription), THEN SHOW Right Eye (OD), Left Eye (OS), and Pupillary Distance (PD).
  • IF Vision Type = Non-Prescription (Frame Only), keep the prescription fields hidden to prevent customer confusion.

Step 3: Add Dynamic Lens Coating Price Add-ons

For premium lens materials and anti-glare coatings, add custom surcharge rules:

  • Standard 1.56 Index: +$0.00
  • High-Index 1.67 Thin Lens: +$30.00
  • Ultra High-Index 1.74 (Strong Prescriptions): +$60.00
  • Polarized Sunglass Tint: +$25.00

When the shopper selects an upgraded lens package, GP Product Options dynamically recalculates the total product price and syncs the exact fee to the Shopify cart.

Step 4: Validate Prescription Fields

Enable Required Field Validation on OD SPH, OS SPH, and Pupillary Distance so customers cannot proceed to checkout with incomplete optical parameters.

Order Fulfillment & Lab Dispatch

When the customer completes checkout, all prescription inputs (OD/OS SPH, CYL, Axis, PD, and uploaded Rx files) are cleanly formatted as Line Item Properties on the Shopify Order detail page.

Your optical lab technicians and warehouse team can export or view the exact lens requirements directly inside Shopify Admin or sync them to your lab management software via standard order webhooks.
